Is your hair starting to look thin and scanty? Or is it brittle and dry all of a sudden? Dealing with hair fall and dry hair can be stressful. Nutritional deficiencies can result in your hair starting to fall out and look brittle. In both men and women, one of the main causes of hair loss is iron deficiency. A balanced diet that is filled with essential vitamins and minerals is the key to maintaining healthy hair growth. Restrictive diets, rapid weight loss or medical conditions may also lead to iron deficiencies. With the right treatment and a few lifestyle changes, hair loss that is caused due to iron deficiency can be controlled.

What is the link between iron deficiency and hair loss?

Iron helps to boost energy levels, nourish your muscles and also helps your immune system. In other words, it is crucial for your overall functioning and well-being. With low levels of iron, your body is unable to produce hemoglobin (red blood cells). These are the cells that carry oxygen around your body, allowing them to function. When there is a shortage of iron, your body channels its available supply of oxygen to the vital organs instead of your hair follicles. Without iron, your hair follicles are unable to function properly. This disturbs healthy hair growth and leads to hair fall.

Moreover, there are many studies that have linked hair loss with calorie restriction, nutrition deficiencies and psychological tension. In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine, 180 women were observed for hair loss problems. The most common cause of hair loss in women was due to iron deficiency and stress. When suffering from hair loss due to iron deficiency, it usually affects your hairline and causes hair thinning. It is also known as telogen effluvium - a type of hair loss. However, in most cases, iron deficiency remains undetected.

What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Pale skin
  • Faster then normal heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold hand and feet
  • Inflammation or soreness of your tongue
  • Brittle nails and hair loss

Due to menstruation, iron deficiency is more prevalent in women of a childbearing age and less common in men. If you are worried that your hair fall might be caused by an iron deficiency, it is best to consult your doctor. Over the counter iron supplements are often the first choice of treatment but it is only recommended that you take them under the supervision of a doctor. Unless your doctor has diagnosed you with iron deficiency, iron supplements can be dangerous to your health. A safer way is to include iron-rich foods, such as tofu, lentils, beans, red meat, spinach, raisins or dates.

Moreover, there can be other reasons for your hair loss too. To understand the underlying reason for your hair loss, doctors can make the diagnosis based on the symptoms or appearance of the hair. To make sure of the diagnosis, a ferritin level blood test may also be suggested. This blood test will help measure the levels of iron in your body.
